Whether parading around with her disco stick or staging her own death at the VMAs, Lady Gaga knows how to put on a visually enticing show. In a recent interview with Dallas radio station KISS 106.1, the singer spoke about her upcoming Monster Ball Tour, which kicks off its 22-date run next month in Montreal.

“It’s really amazing. The show is based on kind of this theme of evolution, which has a lot to do with how I’ve changed over the years, and kind of in a way, in a symbolic way of describing myself as a person, as Gaga,” she said.

The Monster Ball was scheduled on the heels of her canceled Fame Kills Tour with Kanye West. Gaga said she wouldn’t include any concepts from the tour that never was, but she did say that the show will tell a story in the performance-arts fashion fans expect. “I actually hatch out of an egg in the show. That’s the beginning of the show. It’s kind of the beginning of evolution. I begin as a cell,” she revealed.

Gaga also talked about pre-packaged pop stars and the fact that she isn’t one. The singer takes pride in her past, even if it took her a long time to get where she is today.

“In a way, I think it’s kind of convoluted the way that people do think about it, because the assumption is that they believe that pop singers should kind of pop out of nowhere and be born and cracked out of an egg one year that the record label lays, and that’s not the way that should happen,” she told the radio station.

The Monster Ball will support the singer’s re-packaged album, The Fame: Monster, which hits stores on November 24. Opening acts include Kid Cudi and Jason Derulo, who recently told MTV News that he’d be on the second half of the tour.

Along with thecocknbullkid, Santigold, Remi Nicole, Ebony Bones and Shingai Shoniwa of Noisettes, Mpho Skeef is part of a new breed of young black, or mixed race, London girls (and look out for American not-soul performer Janelle Monae later this year) who resolutely refuse to make the music that’s expected of “women of colour”, such as R&B, hip-hop or grime. Her new single Box N Locks is out this week and looks set to storm the charts.

Their role models, more than any female musicians, are Prince or Andre 3000 of OutKast, drawn as they are to those male artists’ uncategorisable, polymorphously promiscuous and pan-generic approach that enables them to do a hard-rock number one minute and a liquid-synth ballad the next, while playing with racial and gender stereotypes and generally doing the “expect the unexpected” thing.

If they do have a female precursor in mind, one on whom they’ve based their vision of themselves, it’s probably the original future-shock “pandrogen” Grace Jones, even if the latter arguably achieved greater notoriety outside of chi-chi nightclub circles for her outrageous couture than she did for her music (how many Grace Jones songs can you name apart from maybe Pull Up to the Bumper and Slave to the Rhythm? Exactly). The point is, there is no evidence that there is, or indeed ever has been, a demand among the British public for such a female performer.

This one’s for the kids. All those out there that never grow up. The kids that spend there waking minutes thinking about their iron lung. The kids that have to spend every night out there sleeping in the iron lungs of today. Yes iron lungs are still around, they have just gone underground. The name has been changed and as such no one thinks they are still around and pushes them undergound.

Porta-lungs are what they are called today. But they are the same devices of yesterday. Their music is the same as the past. They wheeze, hiss, moan and groan just like the old iron lungs of the past. There is not as many around as before but they are still here. The lungs for the kids of today are not for the polio era but other modern illnesses. Just recently a new one was to be shipped abroad.

Most kids of today have never seen the inside of one. And I hope that they never have to see one. But those that have, they want others to understand that sleeping in a regular bed to
them is not an option.

The music that pokes fun of the iron lung is not at all funny to those that use the lungs of today. The new era of vents and portable vents does not work for all cases and is actually not at all good for some. So the sound of the porta-lung’s moaning is music to the ears of a few. They know that while it is
moaning, groaning and creaking it is keeping some one alive!

What about classical piano improvisation?

Many of the methods used for learning jazz piano improvisation can be applied in classical piano improvisation as well.

Many composers like Johann Sebastian Bach, W.A. Mozart, Felix Mendelssohn, Frédéric Chopin and others were actually more famous for their improvisational skills during their lifetime.

Personally I have tried to develop this skill and I find it very enjoyable to improvise with classical piano pieces as a basis for creative trips.

I love to improvise in the style of classical composers trying to find myself somewhere among the notes. These special moments are a form of meditation. They clear my mind and also helps me as a composer to stimulate my creative abilities.

The most important reason for developing this skill is that it is fun and very enjoyable. If you learn classical piano improvisation you will benefit from it in many other ways too:

1. It will be easier for you to memorize classical piano sheet music as you will become more aware of what happens when you press down the piano keys.

2. You will find it easier to compose your own piano pieces in a classical piano style.

3. You can make up your own technical exercises on your piano on the go.

4. You will understand your piano better.

There are many ways to develop your skill in classical piano improvisation. Let’s see!

1. As soon as you have learned a piano scale try to use it by creating improvised melodies while playing chords or patterns with the other hand.

2. When you learn new chords try to create patterns to play with your left hand as you play improvised melodies with your right hand. A common easy left hand pattern is with the chord C:

3. As you learn to play new classical piano compositions try to memorize beautiful or exciting passages in these compositions and play around with them and try to modify them and improvise over them.

4. Try to create classical melodies at the piano without stopping. In order to learn to improvise classical music you have to practice just that - To improvise classical piano music.

The most basic requisite in order to develop the skill of classical piano improvisation is that you want to learn this art and with this desire you will find ways to practice this art in all your piano playing.

The facility used to master the CD is nearly as important as the engineer. CD mastering facilities are distinct from recording studios, and while a facility can include both recording and mastering equipment, most high-end CD mastering facilities are separate. The type of equipment used in different CD mastering facilities varies greatly. Some facilities use all analog equipment; others only use digital gear, while others have both kinds of devices.

Many CD mastering engineers think it is a good idea to use a different facility for recording and mastering. On the other hand, digital technology has begun to replace analog in most areas of production, and many people believe that recording and mastering will be completely digital in the future. Part of the reason is that digital processors and monitors are useful for making very precise adjustments and for eliminating extraneous sounds from a recording.

Cultures around the world since the beginning of time have appreciated, enjoyed, and incorporated some form of music in their everyday lives. However, just as one man’s trash is another man’s treasure, one man’s music can often be another man’s noise, and vice versa. Still, certain universal aspects of music can serve as a means of communication between two people who have little else in common.

Some say that the only thing that makes music different from noise is the culture of those listening to it. There is some truth in this; you wouldn’t expect a typical American teenager to be found head banging to a CD of tribal African chanting. Similarly, you’d be surprised to find that African tribe knowing what to make of a boy band ballad. Of course, such vastly different cultures may not share musical preferences, many slightly more similar cultures can enjoy a real connection as a direct result of shared musical abilities and experiences.

In an attempt to appeal to newer markets, music artists are evaluated for their international appeal as international sales can equal or even surpass the domestic sales figures. This worldly appeal can be successful in creating a shared interest and bond between citizens of greatly different lands: Americans and Chinese, Russians and South Africans. It is thus not surprising that a typical music promotion tour includes various international destinations.

Music artists of today and yesterday have been known to help cross cultural divides in times of conflict and even war. Their music can bring crowds of people in warring countries to their feet, tapping their feet to the rhythm. News broadcasts are frequently carrying stories of disheartened soldiers abroad smiling again after a visit from familiar pop music artists.

On the other hand, music is also a frequent bone of contention between the generations. Why is the music of different generations more often referred to by its respective decade (i.e. ‘the sixties’, ‘the eighties’) rather than by its most popular artists or a particular genre? Grandparents are rarely found enjoying the same music as their grandchildren. Much more common, they are often heard complaining that the other’s music is too loud, too soft, too fast, or too slow. Even music artists with a wide-ranging appeal, like The Beatles, are not always appreciated by both extremes of the generation gap. Though their music stands a much greater chance of acceptance from fresh ears than rap has from a Frank Sinatra crowd.

Music hence signifies different things to different people often extending to a deeply personal level. Each generation~s music represents the aspirations, heartbreaks, achievements of people living in that specific time period. And as they carry different viewpoints on many daily social and political issues they get further divided by varying taste of music. However, the feeling to be human and alive to the world around us, and the desire to express life’s experiences through music remains common to all irrespective of the generation gap - and is capable of crossing the most guarded country borders.

I read a “tip” on music sales today that made me angry. The author asked, “Are you selling your CD for $15?” Then goes on to say that we are Indie musicians and we shouldn’t. Sell it for less because it is the industry standard for Indie musicians to sell for less. How do I say this nicely…that’s Bull Sh*t!!!!

That attitude pisses me off. I mean it is hard enough for us to make a decent leaving selling CDs, but to sell them for $10? Unless you have less than 10 songs, don’t listen to em. It is that attitude that makes some people think you only have to pay $10 for a CD.

Will more people buy the CD? Well, probably…a few. But you know what? If people like your music, they WILL pay $15 for a CD! Surprise, surprise, surprise. They may falter a bit, but they will eventually buy it, and when they do, it will mean so much more to them. Don’t be fooled. You are a professional. Now act like one.

Now, let me give you an incentive why you should sell for $15 instead of $10. There are some age-old terms used in marketing, perhaps you’ve heard of them…discounts and sales?

Yeah, I admit it. I’m hesitant to pay $15 for a CD. It is a lot of money for a CD. I’m constantly looking for great CD deals online. I can’t stand paying $15 for a CD. It’s too much for my poor musician blood. But some, like me, require an extra incentive. So why not put your CD on sale? Offer 10% or 20% off. One-time only, or for a limited time. And you know, at 10-20% off, you’re still making more than $10. But to your fans, 10-20% off sounds like a great deal! Add a touch of urgency, and even those who hadn’t gotten around to buying your CD will.
