Some Hearsay Touching on Sydney Botulinum Injections
Sydney Botulinum injections (B.tox for short) is swiftly becoming a must amongst Sydney’s fashionable crowd and in fact it has become an important part of a beauty routine for those in Sydney. Still I am frequently astonished by the ludicrous rumours in connection with this treatment.
Here I have listed some of the more popular mistakes which I hear everyday at Star Cosmetic Medicine, where I work as a doctor.
Urban Legend no. 1: I may not have the ability to use my facial muscles normally!
Research indicates there are sixty or so muscles in the human face. The excessive use of these muscles may cause wrinkles. If an excess of B.tox has been used the facial muscles may become less expressive. The dosage used by nearly all physicians make you look ‘refreshed’, but still you will maintain your facial expression.
So the proper dosage of B.tox in the appropriate place means facial expression is retained whilst any lines undergo a softening effect.
Urban Legend no. 2: B.tox is toxic!
Actually there is a grain of truth in this statement. Botulinum Toxin Type A is the correct medical nomenclature. Too large a dose can loosen facial muscles that you do not want relaxed or may even cause sickness.
But to help you understand the reality of the situation - an ancient pharmacist’s expression states that ‘everything is a poison - all depending on the dose’. All drugs can make someone unwell in large enough dosages. If you drink too much water you will die.
Urban Legend no. 3: B.tox hurts!
In our clinic Star Cosmetic Medicine the doctor will use a hypodermic needle finer than hair. A lot of people state that the shots aren’t worse than mosquito bites. Certainly not in the same ball park as compared to having a blood profile.
Urban Legend no. 4: I will lose sensation in my face!
Not true. B.tox targets the neuromuscular junction, and not on the nerves of sensation. B.tox just targets the ability to relax muscles.
Urban Legend no. 5. Once you start B.tox you need to continue or you will age quicker than ever!
This is also untrue.
Botox is thought to last for upwards of 3 months. Further treatments tend to last longer. Gradually as muscle strength builds up again the wrinkles will eventually reappear. Nevertheless your lines won’t be any worse than when you started your treatment.
Even should you do not have B.tox treatments ever again - any wrinkles will most likely be a little better than if you had not undergone the treatment. Due to the fact that you have given your skin a ‘wrinkle holiday’ whilst the treatment was effective.
