Protect Your Identity Today or Deal with Identity Theft Tomorrow

Protect your identity today and you may not have to repair the damage a thief could wreak on your finances and your credit tomorrow.

Would-be thieves and scammers are as devious as ever, employing whatever low- or high-tech methods at their disposal to steal consumers’ vital personal information, money and credit.

There are a lot of things you can do to protect your personal information; your social security number, bank account information, credit or debit card numbers and even online passwords. A bit of prevention today will save you a lot of hassle in the future.

The most vital piece of information that you must protect is your social security number. For the most part, your nine digit social security number is your identity. A thief holding your social security number could potentially assume your identity, max out your credit and commit other crimes in your name. Your life could be devastated for years to come.

Don’t ever let anyone see your social security number unless it’s absolutely necessary! A number of banks of other businesses will use your social security number as an ID number. Doing so is actually against the law but the law is rarely, if ever, enforced. You may be able to get your driver’s license number used as an alternate ID number, depending on the rules and regulations of the particular company you are dealing with.

If you have to provide your social security or a credit or debit card number to a company you do business with, find out exactly what the company does to protect your information from prying eyes. Beware of companies that don’t have stringent security procedures in place to protect your vital information. If your information is easily accessible to any employee, a dishonest employee could easily steal your information and use it against you.

Online, you may be at even further risk in the growing world of eCommerce. Make sure any Web site you may do business with employs 128-bit encryption and Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) protocols to protect your credit or debit card numbers. Also, a good software or hardware firewall, up-to-date antivirus and antispyware software is recommended to further protect the account data that may be stored within your computer.

The strongest security in the world won’t prevent people from seeing your information if you are careless, however. Any hard copies of your sensitive information, including statements and various account documents, should be either locked away in a safe or shredded immediately. A thief rummaging through your garbage may be able to find your information very easily if you don’t destroy any vital documents before dumping them.

Thieves often don’t even have to root through garbage to get your vital information. All they really have to do is keep a watchful eye on you. If you use a debit or credit card in public, make sure nobody is standing too close to you when you swipe your card. A thief hiding in plain sight may be intent on seeing your card number without your knowledge.

If you have to sign a credit card receipt your credit card number will likely be reprinted on the receipt. In most cases the first 12 of the 16 digits comprising your credit card number will be blacked out. If not, you are allowed by law to black out the first 12 numbers in person. Don’t let any uninformed cashier deny you your legal right to protect your account numbers.

Protection from identity theft begins with you. The steps you take today can keep your credit and your financial future from falling into the wrong hands.

Syndicate Your Way To Success

RSS, which stands for “Really Simple Syndication” is rapidly becoming a premier choice for webmasters across the Internet. This fast growing way of distributing content is helping publishers discover new horizons and reach new audiences.

The Internet thrives and survives on information. Quality information is supplied through quality content, delivered on a regular basis. Using RSS, publishers can distribute their content and let other webmasters syndicate it on their own website or blog. This would not only leverage the publishers’ work but also help webmasters get fresh and updated content for their site.

In this article we evaluate how both publishers and webmasters can benefit through syndication.

Syndication for Publishers

RSS not only helps publishers build their brand image but also brings them targeted traffic. By giving other webmasters an opportunity to re-syndicate their content on their own website, publishers can get a lot more exposure. Using RSS, publishers can easily:

Increase Subscribers - Since RSS is extremely subscriber friendly, you have a greater chance of getting long-term subscribers by displaying your RSS feeds on other websites. By spreading your content across the web, you will be adding new subscribers who are interested in what you are offering.

Get Targeted Traffic - By simply displaying your RSS headlines across websites similar to yours, you can attract laser-targeted traffic. There are blogs and content oriented on websites on almost any subject on the net. Sharing your content with them would give your website’s popularity a boost and increase it’s visibility among peer groups.

Build Trust and Credibility - Having your content delivered through a number of other websites, you slowly and steadily build value for your content. Your readers trust you and your work more as your credibility shoots up. It helps you to share and prove your expertise on your subject. Which in turn helps you to get the right amount of feedback to improve and enhance your publication further.

Publishing and Distributing Your Own RSS Feed

To start distributing your content via RSS, you will have to publish an RSS feed first, which is in an XML format. If you are technically equipped, you can create and publish your RSS feed manually by referring to the following tutorials:

http://www.mnot.net/rss/tutorial/
http://rssgov.com/rssworkshop.html
http://www.webreference.com/perl/tutorial/8/
http://searchenginewatch.com/sereport/article.php/2175271

However, if you aren’t aware technically, you can use a third party service like http://www.rapidfeeds.com to publish your own RSS feed in a few minutes. RapidFeeds is a free service, which helps you create and manage any number of feeds.

Once you have your RSS feed published, you can give it away on your website for other webmasters to syndicate it on their own site.

If you want to make it easier for others to re-syndicate your RSS content, you can use a service like RapidFeeds MySite. Using MySite to distribute your content, all you need to do is place an “Add to MySite” button, and anyone interested in re-syndicating your feeds can instantly do so by clicking on this button. RapidFeeds MySite then automatically generates the code for the content in the preferred programming language.

You can get your MySite button at http://www.rapidfeeds.com/getmysitebutton.php

Syndication for Webmasters

Webmasters can immensely benefit by displaying RSS feeds on their website and blogs. There are thousands of websites, which publish their own regularly updated RSS feeds. Webmasters can make use of these feeds to get automatically generated content for their site. By syndicating and displaying RSS feeds on their website, webmasters can effortlessly:

Get Fresh Updated Content - By displaying RSS feeds on your website or blog, you can get automatically updated content from different sources. Since new content is vital for any content based website, RSS feeds can supply your site with news and information your readers are interested in. You can theme the content according to your needs.

Search Engine Traffic - The search engines are always looking for relevant content, which is updated frequently. It’s a known fact that search engines give higher priority to websites, which update their content from time to time. In their quest to provide the best and the newest information available, search engines simply love websites with good, relevant content. What’s more, it’s already been proven that search engine spiders your site more often when you have constantly changing content and thus your site gets index more frequently.

Repeat Visitors - By having RSS feeds displayed on your site, you not only get new visitors but also have a high number of repeat visitors. Since most of the time people are on a lookout for a new info, they would be greeted with updated content each and every time they visit your site. This would help you create a long-term relationship with your visitors.

Displaying RSS Feeds on Your Site

If you are tech savvy, you can manually create the code for displaying an RSS feed on your site in the language you prefer. On the other hand, you can also use third party services for this purpose. There are a number of tools available which will help you syndicate and display any RSS feed. A few of them are given below.

RapidFeeds MySite - http://www.rapidfeeds.com/mysitewebmasters.php
Carp - www.geckotribe.com/rss/carp/ ($19.97)
RSS Xpress Lite - http://rssxpress.ukoln.ac.uk/lite/include/?t=1

Understanding RSS - Part Twelve - A Full RSS Feed Template For Podcasting & VideoCasting

This is a “full level” RSS template. Here we add the enclosure command for PodCasting. My previous article had the basic bare-bones template and the full template with the CDATA construct. Now we will have a template for Podcasting or Videocasting.

You can easily copy and paste this into a template.
If you are not a techie and dealing with XML for the first time, use a decent text only editor, unless you can use FrontPage or DreamWeaver or a dedicated XML editor. Be careful of any extra charcters that you may sneak in with your typing, and remember not to touch the opening or closing brackets. If you do not know what you are doing do NOT touch the first three lines. The line beginning with the “channel” element is where you should begin to substitute the information on your feed.

Below we have two items in this channel. You can of course add as many items as your heart desires. Just keep on adding the entire section of beginning and ending with

<item></item> and filling in the information.

Just to remind you. The enclosure command consists of three parts:

  1. url - The URL of the actual enclosure.

  2. length - The size in bytes and not an estimate but a total size

  3. type - A standard MIME type, e.g. Audio, Video, Text etc. A list and explanation of standard MIME types can be found here - http://www.fileformat.info/info/mimetype/standard.htm

By the way. We are keeping RandyPandy’s Perfumery, but since his wife Sandy loves Janis Joplin the enclosure command will contain Summertime from Janis. Hope you don’t mind!

First a template with information and then a template without. (The editing software forces an empty line between each command however in your Feed you should not have any empty lines. Just delete the lines with no information if you copy & paste)

The 7-Step RSS Marketing Plan

If you’re wondering how to get started with RSS marketing, here’s a basic 7-step plan that should provide some needed guidance. Use these steps as your personal RSS marketing checklist to get your started and help you see whether you’re on the right track.

1. START USING RSS AS AN END-USER

The first step to getting started with RSS marketing/publishing is getting your own RSS aggregator, subscribing to other RSS feeds and just seeing and understanding how it all works.

There’s a variety of RSS aggregators to choose from. Just a small sample:

a) Web-based RSS aggregators (websites): http://my.yahoo.com, http://www.pluck.com, http://www.newsgator.com, http://www.bloglines.com

b) Desktop RSS aggregators (software): http://www.awasu.com, http://www.bradsoft.com/feeddemon/, http://www.stevenwood.org/stories/2003/06/08/voxLite.htm

c) Integrated RSS aggregators (integrate with IE or Microsoft Outlook): http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/ (browser with integrated RSS features), http://www.newsgator.com, http://www.pluck.com, http://www.attensa.com/index.php?ys=1

2. PLAN YOUR RSS FEEDS

Planning your RSS feeds might be the most important thing you do about RSS. You most certainly need an RSS feed for your e-zine, your news section, your articles etc.

But how you will package these, what others you might want to offer and other important issues, are much more complex than we can cover in this space. A precise overview of all of the opportunities is available in the “Unleash the Marketing and Publishing Power of RSS” e-book at http://rss.marketingstudies.net?src=sa13

You might also want to do follow-up (autoresponder) RSS feeds, feeds for your affiliates, feeds for your employees or business partners, feeds for the media, and so on.

3. CREATE A LIST OF RSS MARKETING/PUBLISHING REQUIREMENTS

Then create a list of requirements for the RSS marketing/publishing solution you will be getting to publish your feeds. The list should answer the basic questions, such as:

a) Do you want to integrate RSS publishing with your existing content management system?

b) What RSS metrics you’ll want to watch? For example, are you satisfied with just a rough idea of how many people are reading your RSS feed, or are you interested in more precise subscriber counts, clicks and even individual content item popularity?

c) Do you need feed personalization, such as personalizing your RSS content with the receipient’s name and other details?

d) Do you want to provide your subscribers with the ability to precisely select the content they want to receive in your RSS feed (customization), such as by content topic, keywords, authors and so on?

e) Do you want the RSS feeds to be hosted on your own server?

f) Do you need the ability to target promotional messages or other content to your individual RSS feed subscribers, for example based on their previous clicks and reading habits, or even their subscription data?

g) What’s your budget?

h) Etc.

More information on all the different possibilities provided by RSS is available in the free Business Case for RSS report at http://rssdiary.marketingstudies.net/case/index.html?src=sa13

4. CHOOSE AN RSS PUBLISHING TOOL AND CREATE YOUR FIRST FEED

After you’ve prepared a list of requirements you can start searching for the appropriate tool. These come in a few general categories:

a) Desktop feed generation tools

Desktop software you can use to inexpensively, quickly and easily generate RSS feeds, but doesn’t allow for more advanced features such as content targeting. The market leader in this category is http://www.feedforall.com.

b) Hosted online RSS publishing solutions

If you don’t want to be bothered with a desktop tool and having to constantly upload your RSS feeds to your server, you could try a basic hosted online RSS publishing solution, such as http://www.myrsscreator.com. Using their simple service you don’t even need your own website to publish via RSS. Another good choice, especially if you’re in PR, is http://www.press-feed.com/

c) Advanced RSS marketing solutions

These will cover more advanced RSS marketing capabilities, such as metrics, scheduled autoresponder messages, database building capabilities and similar. The strongest contenders in this market are http://www.simplefeed.com, http://www.nooked.com, http://myst-technology.com and some other strong players as well. Solutions aimed especially at smaller companies include http://www.rssautopublisher.com and http://www.market-soft.com/bypass/

d) Other options

There are many other options as well, one for example being using your existing content management system to publish RSS feeds, or using a blog publishing solution such as http://www.movabletype.com

5. PROMOTE YOUR RSS FEEDS THROUGH YOUR OWN CHANNELS

a) Create an RSS presentation page, on which you explain: what RSS is; how the visitor will benefit from using RSS; where they can get a free RSS aggregator (recommend one yourself!); how they can subscribe to your RSS feeds; and why they should subscribe to your own RSS feeds.

Then, on this same page, include the links to all of your RSS feeds. In addition to the standard orange RSS button, also include direct links for subscriptions via MyYahoo! (get it here http://my.yahoo.com/s/button.html) and other relevant services, such as Bloglines (http://www.bloglines.com).

b) Now promote this RSS presentation page as much as you can using all of your available channels.

c) Promote your RSS feeds directly below your e-zine subscription box, and always “above the fold”. Promote your RSS presentation page (telling your visitors that’s where they can subscribe to your feeds) on the most prominent locations of your site.

d) If you’re publishing more than one RSS feed, but rather a couple of focused topic feeds, promote each of them next to their topics on the site.

e) Promote your RSS feeds in all of your e-mail messages and e-zine issues.

f) As for the content, don’t just say “Subscribe to receive news from my site”, but rather prepare compelling copy to specifically show your visitors why they need to subscribe to your content in the first place and why they should subscribe specifically to your RSS feeds.

e) Enable Auto-discovery

Just include the following piece of HTML code in the section of your webpages and you’ll be all set:
link rel=”alternate” type=”application/rss+xml” title=”RSS” href=”ENTER_RSS_URL”

6. PROMOTE YOUR RSS FEEDS THROUGH EXTERNAL CHANNELS

a) Submit your feeds to the appropriate search engines and directories. A good list can be found here: http://www.masternewmedia.org/rss/top55/

b) Ping the RSS aggregation sites each time you update your online content, letting them know that new content is available to be indexed. You can use this free service: http://pingomatic.com

7. OTHER KEY RSS ACTIVITIES

a) Measure and optimize your feeds

b) Syndicate your feed content to other web media

c) Display third-party RSS feeds on your site

How to Syndicate Your RSS Feed

If you syndicate your RSS Feed or advertise it, you will get an immediate boost in traffic to your web site by others reading and/or linking to your information.

There a 2 ways to do this:

a) Place an XML button at the top of your home page. This is a little orange image that links to your RSS file. You can see one at the top of my home page at www.isitebuild.com. Get a copy of the image (right click, save picture as) and upload it to your website. Place the image, with your xml link, on your home page. For example, here’s the line of code I placed on my home page:

rss for maryland web design

Feel free use this code for your own site but remember to replace the information with your own link.

b) Submit your site’s RSS feed URL to various aggregators or news readers. This will enable them to start check your RSS feed for updates.

Here is a list of some of the most popular news aggregators:

Daypop: http://www.daypop.com/info/submit.htm

Syndic8: http://www.syndic8.com/suggest.php?Mode=data Aggregator

Userland: http://aggregator.userland.com/

Feedster: http://www.feedster.com/add.php

Postami: http://www.postami.com/rss.finder/submit_feed.php

Tip:

Update your RSS feed regularly - add new articles to your RSS file on a regular basis. Make sure you link each article to your site to increase your web traffic. Remember to delete your old articles because the dates next to your articles will adjust depending on when news aggregators pick them up.

You only need to do this once and then syndicators tracking your feed automatically pick up your new feed items as you update them.

Conclusion:

Even though RSS feeds is a relatively new way of marketing, once you set it up it takes very little time to maintain and provides another great way to increase the number of visitors to your web site.

Spamicide: Man Spammed to Death While Checking His E-mail

Death by spam is now possible with a new device by Microsoft. The device when implanted in the user’s skull allows downloading of email directly into the brain.

Niles Bookbinder, 37, an assistant working for Jon Hanson, author of Good Debt, Bad Debt was accidentally spammed to death Tuesday morning using a beta version of a new email device called, “MS Mind.” A Microsoft spokesperson said, “We don’t have all of the bugs worked out yet, but this is the first death we know of.” Mr. Bookbinder had unwittingly “unchecked” the spam filter in the MS Mind control panel. Without the spam filter, apparently Niles unleashed the entire world of spam into his “medulla interface” and was literally spammed to death. It’s likely the last words Mr. Bookbinder heard were, “You’ve got mail!”

Wireless Medulla Interface providers are popping up everywhere. Dr. Jack Kevorkian sees the new Wireless “G” Medulla cards as a real advance for him. With these systems, euthanasia supporters predict quick, painless death by simply bypassing the filters and downloading thousands of spam emails quickly. Kevorkian said, “I have been looking forward to killing patients by email.” Kevorkian expects his prices to be competitive with AOL.

While it is not a victimless crime, it would be a crime without a knowable perpetrator. You would have no way of knowing whether your “loved one” was finished off by the breast enlargement, Viagra softabs starting at $2.99, or $ave $$$ now refinance emails.

A PETA spokesperson, Ima Chihuahua, said she found the idea disturbing because it could lead to so-called Spam Collars that would be used to kill pets as they aged, or “convenience” killings, such as when a young couple could not find a kennel on their way to Vegas or they simply change their minds about having a pet.

PETA may be right. It has long been rumored that KFC has been testing the effectiveness of spamming chickens to death versus simply whacking off their heads. In earlier tests, chickens were forced to watch Gili and Ishtar until they simply cut off their own heads, but this experiment was discontinued because of the cruelty to experimenters.

Spamicide, accidental or not, will undoubtedly set off a bitter debate in America as Anti-Spammers and Right-to-Spam groups rally to raise money and jockey for political clout.

George W. Bush seemed bewildered at this morning’s briefing. He looked to his press secretary and said, “Are we Right-to-Spam or Anti-Spammers?” Elsewhere, Jesse Jackson, finding it difficult to be Right-to-Spam said, “It should be the choice of the spammee. Spamicide should be legal, available, and rare.”

NEXT WEEK: Partial Spam Deletion. Should this barbaric practice be outlawed? Are thousands of viable spams being killed in spam filters, just before being downloaded? The debate continues…

Spam: Hiding Your Email Address

In many instances you will want to put your email address on your website, even if you provide a form as a contact method. This is useful because it increases the number of ways that someone can contact you. Why is that important? Because presumably if you have a website you are attempting to communicate with the world - and communication goes both ways. If you have a commercial site then the answer should be obvious - someone may want to purchase something.

Another reason to put an email address directly on your web page is for people to request information via autoresponder. These allow your visitors to click a simple mailto link and get your promotional materials or articles in their email inbox.

The problem with directly including your email addresses on your page is spam harvesters. These a programs created by scum and run by ignorant or unethical fools. What they do is search through the internet, looking at web sites and pages for email addresses to add to those million email address collections that you see advertised (mostly in spam) all over the place.

There is really no ironclad way to prevent these bottom-feeders from scanning your web site for email addresses. There are a number of techniques, however, to make it a little more difficult for them.

One of these is to code your email addresses in something called Unicode. This is a “language” for encoding special characters on web pages. All modern browsers support Unicode as it’s primary intention is to allow languages all over the planet to be represented.

For example, the following email address:

webmaster@internet-tips.net

will be shown in Unicode as:

webmaster @internet -tips.net

As you can see from the table below, using Unicode characters is simple. Just substitute the Unicode sequence in the table for the corresponding character. Then use all of those sequences wherever you want to put that email address.

@ @ E E M M U U c c k k s s . . F F N N V V d d l l t t - - G G O O W W e e m m u u _ _ H H P P X X f f n n v v A A I I Q Q Y Y g g o o w w B B J J R R Z Z h h p p x x C C K K S S a a i i q q y y D D L L T T b b j j r r z z

I suppose it is inevitable that the scum spammers will eventually make their spam robots smart enough to understand these codes. Until then, however, it is a reasonably effective technique for reducing spam in your inbox.
